Is McDonald’s Halal in Canada?
Love McDonald’s? But, is this restaurant Halal in Canada? We have got an official announcement from the company on this matter.
TL; DR: It just isn’t a feasible option!
Visiting a country where Muslims are not the majority poses one big question: Where to find halal food? In continuance to that, is the standard fast-food chain like McDonald’s offering halal food? Most of the time, the answer to the latter is no.
It is no different in Canada. While food franchises and restaurants offer delicious, certified halal food, unfortunately, McDonald’s can not sustain a viable business if it provides halal food to its consumers.
Not only because the majority of customers do not demand it per Se, but also because of the increased cost associated with procuring halal meat and processing it, and operating separate kitchens with separate utensils, and even hiring independent staff to handle such orders.
Official: McDonalds does not serve Halal in Canada
In an official statement on Twitter, McDonald’s Canada replied to a query around the same question as we are addressing today, “None of our menu items are Halal. Our restaurant operations do not allow us to separate halal products from our regular McDonald’s items nor can we ensure other products in the restaurant meet the standard required for halal designations.”
Although regions with a Muslim majority do have popular fast food franchises serving certified halal meat, they are strictly restricted to those countries.
There is a possibility Australia and New Zealand might serve halal meat in their McDonald’s chain because most of the beef procured there comes from halal slaughterhouses.
Some citizens around GTA, Mississauga, have signed petitions to be served halal meat in McDonald’s outlets in that area. There has not been any change in the company’s policy that may indicate the availability of halal food any time soon.
